Some people simply like to listen to music while they sleep.
But is it possible that sleeping with headphones on could pose an actual medical risk?

There are actually many reasons to consider wearing headphones while sleeping… so let’s talk about those first.
Music is relaxing, and some people simply sleep better when they can hear their favorite music as they drift off to unconsciousness.

Some headphones and earbuds do a really good job of shutting out other sounds.

This is especially true of earbuds.

According to health professionals, Otitis Externa is “a condition that causes inflammation (redness and swelling) of the external ear canal, which is the tube between the outer ear and eardrum.”
This condition tends to be rather common among swimmers… but it can also be caused if you constantly wear headphones.
How do headphones cause it? Well, it is much more likely to happen if you wear earbuds. But essentially, the earbuds rub against the inside of the ear, which causes a buildup of fluid.
This also causes inflammation, which can cause some painful swelling and irritation.
You May Remain ‘Unaware’ of Safety Hazards
This same risk can be posed by wearing earplugs to bed as well.
Wearing something over your ears that at least partially blocks out noise can potentially cause you to miss important events that may go on around you.
Fire alarms, tornado sirens, a baby crying, etc.
Of course, these things are not always an issue.
But if they were to be an issue, and your earbuds or headphones were to keep you from waking up in time… you could be put at risk!
You Can Suffer From ‘Necrosis’ of The Skin
Necrosis is technically “the death of cells in living tissue caused by external factors such as infection, trauma, or toxins.”
And when you wear earbuds or headphones while sleeping, there is a chance that this could happen to your ears!
It is not necessarily likely to happen… but if your headphones or earbuds were to push against your skin hard enough, apply the wrong type of pressure to the wrong location, or otherwise hinder the natural blood flow from one part of your ear to the other…
Well, the tissue could become damaged… and then die… and then, you could be facing a pretty nasty problem!
Substantial tissue necrosis can even lead to problems like gangrene!
This is obviously a less-common problem. It would take quite a bit of pressure for a prolonged period of time for such a thing to occur.
But… it is not impossible. And it is one of the dangers (even if seemingly unlikely) that you face when you fall asleep with headphones or earbuds on.
You Could Be Strangled By Cords
Some earbuds and headphones have cords. And obviously, if these were to get wrapped around your neck while you were asleep, and cut off your oxygen supply… there is a very real chance that you could be strangled.
Again, this is seemingly unlikely in most scenarios.
But it is possible… and is just another reason to avoid wearing headphones and earbuds to bed, especially if they have cords on them.
You Could Damage Your Hearing
Another problem with wearing headphones to bed is that you may not always be aware of how loud the audio is while you are unconscious.
Sure, you can control the volume while you are awake. But what if you fall asleep and it increases unexpectedly? What if one song has harsher tones than the one you tested the volume out on?
What if you lean against your phone and accidentally turn up the music in your sleep?
