However, although it’s easy to “tut-tut” some of the marketing spiel, it’s harder to dismiss the product’s value as an anti-snoring aid.

How Does PureSleep Work?
PureSleep consists of two trays. One fits over the top teeth, the other sits over the ones at the bottom.
The trays initially come as two separate units but, thanks to a clever, three-position locking system, it possible to join them together, back-to-back.
Apart from making it possible to use the trays as a single unit, the system also makes it easy to adjust how far the MAD extends the lower jaw.
When you place the complete unit in your mouth, the fact that the bottom tray sits slightly forward of the top one forces the lower jaw to extend and hold that position.
This extending of the jaw can be an effective way to prevent snoring.
There are many factors that can cause snoring and your tongue and the tissue at the back of the throat can play a big part.
During sleep, the tissues relax and the tongue slips further back in the mouth.
This reduces airflow through the throat and causes the tissue to vibrate creating that terrible rasping noise we call snoring.
Because the tongue is anchored to the base of the mouth, when the mouthpiece forces the jaw forward the tongue has to move forward too.
This (mouthguard) opens up the back of the throat and reduces the likelihood of snoring.

Manufactured in the USA by The Pure Sleep Company. It’s based in California and claims to be on a mission to help people get a good night’s sleep.
The Pure Sleep Company was founded by Noel Lindsay, who remains the company’s CEO. However, Lindsay was not responsible for designing or developing the anti-snoring mouthpiece.
Fenton is a dentist and Kramer was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Both men had been using the device to help their patients for a decade before Lindsay came on the scene.
Lindsay was searching for a way to control his snoring. This led him to Fenton, Kramer, and PureSleep.
To cut a long story short, he licensed the product and helped them find a way to produce it more cheaply and sell it at a lower price.
How to Set-Up the Device
As with similar products, the setting up process begins with a pan of boiling water. You have to immerse the device in the hot water to soften the plastic.
This makes it possible to bite into the two trays and mold them to the shape of your teeth.
Earlier on in this review, I said the process is known as boil and bite. Hopefully, the reason for this should now be abundantly clear.
Although the device is initially in two parts that lock together in a choice of three positions, the system has some limitations.

Mouthpiece Design & Material
As with other MADs, PureSleep is a variation on a theme. After the initial set-up, its physical appearance is not noticeably different from the average device of this type.
Nevertheless, the patented design that allows the two separate parts to be adjusted during the set-up stage allows this MAD to offer certain advantages.
Basic MADs consist of a single piece of thermoplastic.
The only way to set the level of jaw extension is to force the jaw forward when you bite into the soft plastic to make the impression.
This system is okay for many people but MADs that are set-up in this way may be unsuitable for people who have overbite or underbite.
Because PureSleep has a choice of three settings, it can be adjusted in a way that makes it a viable option for anyone with overbite or underbite.
However, although the manufacturer is keen to boast about their mouthpiece being an adjustable MAD, after the initial set-up the amount of adjustability is about the same as that of simpler products.
You can repeat the boil and bite process 3-4 times.
The other thing that is a little different about this MAD is the choice of materials. Most MADs are made entirely of thermoplastic. PureSleep is not.
Although most of the device is made from soft thermoplastic, the outside is made from a harder type of plastic.
This increases rigidity and durability. It also allows the mouthpiece to be less bulky than competing MADs that have adjustability as one of their features.
Can You Expect Any Discomfort or Side Effects?
MADs have a reputation for being uncomfortable to wear. That’s possibly their greatest drawback.
People have been known to spend thousands of dollars on custom-built devices only to find they were unable to use them because they caused too much pain.
The fact that MADs can cause discomfort should come as no surprise.
After all, they work by forcing the lower jaw to adopt an unnatural position. It has to remain in that position throughout sleep.
That’s why many MAD users complain of waking up with headaches and painful necks and jaws.

Possibly a more reliable source, the Trustpilot website has many customer reviews. At the time of writing, the aggregated star-rating was four out of five and 69% of the reviews rated the device as “excellent”.
That’s good to see, but Trustpilot has some failings. Businesses can subscribe to its services and moderate the comments. PureSleep has taken advantage of this option.
A disclaimer on its TrustPilot page states the company only deletes posts that contain profanity, personal threats, and other unacceptable comments.
However, people go to sites like TrustPilot looking for unbiased reviews. When manufacturers can police them, how unbiased are they likely to be?
