________________________________________________
Purpose:
- International networking among leading experts in person-centred chronic care.
- Best practice sharing world-wide on how to implement the DAWN Call to Action
- Facilitate new dialogue and partnerships across all disciplines and stakeholders
- Define priorities for concerted action and advocacy
This time, the focus will be on changing the face of diabetes care: National partnerships, organizational changes and clinical tools to improve self-management, quality of life and metabolic control of people with diabetes. The event is held together with Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE) congress 2008, an international congress organised around patient-centred self-management education and long-term follow up strategies in diabetes and other chronic diseases.
In connection with the World Diabetes Day theme of 2007 and 2008 being children with diabetes, the 4th DAWN Summit will also include highlights of DAWN Youth, a new collaborative initiative by ISPAD, IDF and Novo Nordisk to explore the unique unmet needs of children and young people with diabetes and their families worldwide.
Building on international survey research, patient and parent ambassadors and multidisciplinary dialogue events about the unique unmet needs of young people with diabetes, DAWN youth provides a whole new platform to truly give young people with diabetes and their families a voice to be heard. New evidence-based approaches to supporting children and young people with diabetes and their families better cope with and self-manage the condition through positive interactions with the surrounding society and caregivers are being developed as part of the DAWN Youth initiative.
In close collaboration with TPE 2008, the 4th DAWN Summit provides a unique opportunity for all TPE delegates to discuss and reflect on how the new self-management and psychosocial support strategies and tools for chronic self-managed conditions can be implemented in a sustainable way in each country through concerted multi-national and multi-disciplinary advocacy and collaboration.

Building on past success
The DAWN Summit 2008 will be the fourth in a series of similar events organised after the global DAWN (Diabetes Attitudes Wishes and Needs) study in 2001. The study, the largest of its kind to date, showed that huge gaps exist between the educational and psychosocial needs of people with diabetes and the availability of educational and psychosocial support resources in the diabetes healthcare system.
To translate the DAWN study findings into practice, diabetes leaders, politicians, healthcare professionals and NGOs from more than 31 countries used the 1st International DAWN Summit in 2002 to create a global Call to Action for improved educational and psychosocial support for people with diabetes. As a result, more than 30 countries took action to promote patient-centred diabetes care.
Still much remains to be done in terms of translational research, building awareness and driving sustainable implementation of effective patient-centred education systems for all people with chronic illnesses.
