The Novo Nordisk DAWN Award 2006
To stimulate, acknowledge and reward outstanding efforts to improve health and quality of life for people with diabetes Novo Nordisk will award a grant of €15,000 to organizations or individuals whose projects and actions have helped address the people behind the disease.
The criteria for the DAWN Award 2006 are that the initiatives should specifically address inequalities in health among disadvantaged populations with diabetes, such as low-income minorities, illiterate, ethnic minority populations and special needs populations such as elderly and severely ill.
Projects should have demonstrably achieved one or more of the five DAWN goals that were developed based on needs identified in the global DAWN Study and confirmed at the 2nd International DAWN Summit in London 2004:

Enhance communications between people with diabetes and healthcare providers.

Promote communication and coordination between healthcare providers.

Promote active self-management.

Reduce barriers to effective therapy.

Enable better psychological care for people with diabetes.
Criteria for the selection: Candidates will be selected upon their ability to achieve one or more of above goals taking into account the RE-AIM goals for maximizing the public health potential of their efforts and utilizing one or more of the strategies outlined below:

Raise awareness and advocacy.

Educate and mobilize people with diabetes and those at risk.

Train healthcare providers and enhance their competencies.

Provide practical tools and systems.
-
Drive policy and healthcare systems change.

Develop psychological research in diabetes.
Eligibility: Individuals, acedemic, departments, societies, organizations.
Judging: All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of DAWN expert advisory board members and Novo Nordisk. Entries will be marked against the philosophy behind DAWN, the RE-AIM (http://www.re-aim.org ) principles to maximize public health impact and in line with the DAWN Call to Action.
Closing date for entries: Award submissions must be in the hands of the DAWN award panel no later than October 1st 2006.
Communication: The recipient of the DAWN award and grant of €15,000 will be announced at an awards ceremony December 2006 alongside the three best awards entries. These outstanding examples of best practice will be communicated through international publications to inspire others.
Grant: The grant is offered for the purpose of promoting the reach and public health benefit of the awarded effort in the community.
